Bad Fanfic! No Biscuit!

The One

By Siubhan (website)

There is a fanfic genre called songfic, which involves winding the lyrics of a song throughout a piece of fiction. Sometimes this is done by having the song playing in the background throughout the story, sometimes it's done by simply quoting the song in appropriate places, and sometimes it's done by having one character sing to another. The latter is often reviled in the fanfic world, as it's generally looked upon as lazy writing. Here's an example. Oh, and as is traditional, the title of the story is also the title of the song.

Scully and Doggett walked out of Deputy Director Kirsch's office and exchanged world-weary sighs. "Well, I've never been reamed that thoroughly before," Doggett said, scrubbing his hands across his face.

"You get used to it," Scully replied, planting her hands on her lower back and stretching out the kinks in her spine. "Giving reports on X-Files is never easy."

"Yeah, so I'm learning. I think I'm going to call it a day. See you tomorrow, Scully."

Scully hesitated, watching him walk away, then said, "Agent Doggett, wait."

He turned and looked at her with a questioning expression on his face.

"Want to go out and get a drink?" she asked with a guardedly hopeful note in her voice.

"Uh, sure. But why? You've never wanted to spend time with me outside work before."

"I..." She stopped, let out a deep breath, then said, "Agent Mulder's gone, and I have to reconcile myself to that."

Doggett didn't dare say anything more. He didn't want to accidentally get her to snap out of it and start acting like her old aloof self again, not when she finally was reaching out to him. He just nodded and followed her out to the parking lot.

***

Doggett followed Scully to a piano bar in Alexandria. They parked their cars and walked wordlessly in, sliding into a booth with a good view of the piano. A waitress came to take their order.

"I'll have a Heineken," Doggett said.

"Cranberry juice," Scully said.

"You're not drinking?" Doggett asked.

Scully shook her head. "No. There's something I need to tell you." She swallowed, looked down at her hands, then added, "Actually, two things."

"Go ahead. I'm listening."

Scully looked up at him with stricken pale blue eyes, then looked away. Her eyes caught sight of the piano, and suddenly her entire face lit up. Turning back to him, she smiled and said, "Hang on."

Doggett watched in amazement as Scully walked up to the pianist and murmured something in his ear. Was she giving him a request? That didn't seem like her at all. But maybe tonight was his night to be amazed.

The pianist leaned into his microphone and said, "This lovely lady would like to grace a special someone with a song."

Scully, singing? Was this just a dream?

She picked up the microphone, turned to Doggett, and began crooning.

I'm dead from all the loneliness
This is how I feel
Understanding everything
Has never been my deal
Maybe you have crossed my path
To live inside of me
Or maybe you're the reason why I'm losing all my decency

But I believe that you and me we could be so
Happy and free inside a world of misery
And I believe that you and me we could be so...
Inside of you inside of me

Cuz this could be the one
This could be the one
This could be the one
This could be the one

I've been lookin' lookin, lookin'

I've been lookin' for my Mr. Right
But he don't exist
Chemistry is everything
And we're anything but this
Maybe I have crossed your path
To sweep you off your feet
Or maybe I'm the reason
Why you cry at night before you sleep

But I believe that you and me we could be so
Happy and free inside a world of misery
And I believe that you and me we could be so...
Inside of you inside of me

Cuz this could be the one
This could be the one
This could be the one
This could be the one

What do you think?
We could give it a try
'Cause you never know
Maybe we could be soul mates
But maybe not or maybe so
If you never try then you'll never know
The grass could be greener (could be)
And it'll always be greener on the other side
But you just never know

This could be the one

I do believe that you and me we could be so
Happy and free inside a world of misery
And I believe that you and me, we could be so...
Inside of you inside of me

'Cause this could be the one
This could be the one
This could be the one
This could be the one

Maybe so
Maybe not
Who knows?

Doggett had no idea when he'd gotten to his feet, but the moment she put down the microphone, he swept her into a passionate kiss. "I had no idea you felt the way I did," he murmured when they finally came up for air.

Scully looked up at him with bright eyes. "Mulder's gone. I know that now. But you're not."

"No, I'm not. I'll never go. And I'll be the best father a child could hope for."

"Oh John. I love you."

"I love you too, Dana."

THE END
